Good programs

Elana Valastro asked 4 years ago

I am a student, and one of my scholarships at school includes a fellowship that will pay for me to volunteer in a “resource-poor” country. I started looking into IVHQ, but then heard negative things. I study the performing arts at school, but it doesn’t necessarily having to be a program related to that. I do love working with kids, and I also wouldn’t mind doing menial labor or building/cleaning/conservation type programs. Can you suggest some good programs that you consider responsible volunteering and not just voluntourism? Thanks!

Dear Elana,
Thank you for your question! That sounds quite like an interesting study and scholarship! First of all, I am wondering what kind of selection criteria a “resource-poor” country is because most of the developing countries are rather very rich in natural resources, but anyway.
I’d like to recommend you to take a look at the quality standards described on this page. They will give you an idea where to put an emphasis during the selection of a volunteer program. We can hardly recommend you any precise offer as long as we do not have a good idea of your skills and expectations.

Best thing would be to get in touch with recently returned volunteers. They can give you first hand information on their experiences and who will recommend you based on their experiences. Maybe you join our facebook group, you will find many people there willing to discuss your plans in detail.
